A New Report Highlights Scarborough & Whitby as a Net Zero Economic Hotspot
A leading Scarborough businessman has hailed the region’s importance to the UK becoming more sustainable after a new report pinpointed Scarborough & Whitby as an economic hotspot for net zero industries.
Paul Davies, president and managing director of Alexander Dennis, a leading manufacturer of zero-emission buses whose factory is based in Eastfield just outside Scarborough, says the firm are
“delighted to be part of the net zero industry in North Yorkshire with our production of zero-emission buses in Scarborough”.
Davies’ comments come after national analysis by the Confederation of British Industry released today, revealed that Yorkshire’s net zero businesses now employ 57,000 people or 2.6% of the county’s workforce and produces £5.1bn (4%) of its Gross Value Added (GVA). The report claims that the figures mean net zero businesses are twice as productive as the average industry in the region.
The report from CBI Economics and Data City was commissioned by the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) and shows that while Leeds hosts by far the biggest net zero sector in Yorkshire by absolute size, Scarborough & Whitby has the second-greatest proportion of the local economy relative to its size. The report claims there are now over 1,300 people employed in net zero industries in the constituency, adding nearly £100m to the local economy and making up 4.6% of the area’s GVA.
Davies, whose firm expanded their bus and coach manufacturing facility in the area in October 2023, continued:
“The UK bus industry is leading the way in decarbonisation as transport authorities and bus companies move towards cleaner fleets.
“These orders enable us to invest in our facilities and invest in our people through securing skilled jobs and apprenticeships.”
The report also shows that Yorkshire & Humber received more investment funding per business (£472,565) between 2021 and 2023 than London (£376,745). This figure was only outstripped by Scotland, and South West and South East England.
Making up the rest of Yorkshire & Humber’s top five net zero constituencies by relative GVA are Selby, Rotherham, North Lincolnshire and Leeds.
Among the national report it was revealed that the UK’s net zero industry grew 9% in 2023 and that jobs in the sector are better paid by almost £10,000 the average net zero salary being £44,600 compared to the £35,400 UK average.
