A 44-year-old man from Scarborough has been sentenced to three years and three months in prison following a sneak-in burglary that took place in August.
Robert Power, of Castle Road, was apprehended after he stole a laptop, handbag, and purse from a residence on Roscoe Street.
The incident occurred at approximately 4.30am on Sunday, 31 August 2025, when Power entered the victim's home through an insecure door. After the burglary, CCTV footage captured his movements as he made his way into Scarborough town centre.
Just after 9am, an alert police officer on patrol noticed Power on Westborough. Initially intending to speak with him regarding other matters, the officer's suspicions were piqued by the noticeable rectangular shape bulging from the front of Power's tracksuit bottoms. A subsequent stop-and-search led to the recovery of the stolen items, which were hidden in a rucksack.
The stolen belongings were confirmed as belonging to the victim, who verified that her home had indeed been burgled. Power later pleaded guilty to the charges when he appeared before magistrates last month, culminating in his sentencing at York Crown Court on 16 December 2025.
Detective Constable Darrel Temple from Scarborough and Ryedale CID commented on the case, stating
“Power is a prolific offender who has caused significant upset and anxiety for the victim of his crime. Thanks to the excellent work of our local policing team in Scarborough, who spotted him in strange circumstances later that morning, we were able to arrest Power before he had the chance to sell the goods on. We hope the victim can take some comfort knowing he has been forced to face justice.”
North Yorkshire Police emphasised the importance of community vigilance in preventing such crimes. They encourage residents to report any suspicious behaviour by calling 101, and to ensure their homes are secure by locking doors and windows, especially when away or overnight. The police also provide burglary crime prevention advice on their website, aiming to deter opportunistic criminals.
