By Matthew Pells with additional reporting from Anttoni James Numminen, Local Democracy reporter

Scarborough South Bay's poor water quality has been highlighted in the house of commons.

In a debate yesterday The Minister for Environmental Quality and Resilience - Rebecca Pow - said that 93 percent of Britain's beaches are rated as good or excellent.

Scarborough MP - Sir Robert Goodwill - highlighted Scarborough's situation and asked the minister to take an interest.

His intervention came during a parliamentary debate on water quality, as Rebecca Pow MP, the under-secretary of state for environmental quality and resilience commended the Government’s “tremendous record” on bathing water.

She said that “93 per cent of bathing waters around our coast are good or excellent”.

Water quality at the South Bay is rated “poor” by the Environment Agency (EA), but the town’s North Bay beach received a Keep Britain Tidy award for cleanliness.

Rebecca Pow MP - said that solving issues like those in Scarborough is not easy.

A summit was recently held in Scarborough to discuss the South Bay’s bathing water quality, with North Yorkshire Council, the Environment Agency, Defra, and Yorkshire Water all taking part.

After the summit at the beginning of October, the participants said:

“We’ve had a positive meeting with lots of honesty and good challenge around the table between the different organisations involved.

“Between us, we have come up with a list of actions we have all agreed to take forward and which reiterate our commitment to continue to tackle the complex issues at South Bay together.

“These include more detailed testing and analysis of data by the Environment Agency with the assistance of experts at Durham University.

“We will look at best practice around the country in areas that experience similar problems to South Bay and how they have tackled them, including the potential use of natural filter solutions in worst affected areas.

“We will also continue with these senior level meetings to drive forward the agreed actions and work towards improving bathing water quality at South Bay.

“Alongside these actions we collectively welcome McCain’s investment in its new water treatment plant and its offer to support us going forward. We also acknowledge Yorkshire Water’s recently announced planned investment in our area and commitment to deliver local improvements as quickly as possible.”
