Educational establishments in Scarborough and Whitby are set to benefit from a nationwide £450 million government fund to address critical infrastructure needs.
Educational establishments across Scarborough and Whitby are set to benefit from a share of a £450 million government investment aimed at upgrading school facilities.
West Cliff Primary School in Whitby, Castleton Primary School, and Scarborough Sixth Form College have been named among the local sites receiving support from the Condition Improvement Fund.
The money will be shared across nearly 650 sites nationwide to address critical infrastructure needs, including upgrades to electricity and heating systems, as well as roofing repairs. The specific funding amounts awarded to individual schools are not being published to protect their ability to obtain the best value from contractors when carrying out the necessary works.
The financial injection forms part of a ten-year government plan to renew and upgrade buildings across the education sector. This wider strategy includes the ongoing School Rebuilding Programme, which is currently focused on refurbishing schools that have been affected by dangerous reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete materials.
The Condition Improvement Fund is just one element of a broader investment of over £2.1 billion for this year to improve the condition of schools. Furthermore, at least £3.7 billion has been earmarked between 2025 and 2030 to support councils in providing places for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, and to improve the accessibility of mainstream settings.
Alison Hume, the Member of Parliament for Scarborough and Whitby, said:
"By improving our classrooms, the Government is providing our children with the environment they need to succeed in education, prepare for their future careers and thrive in adulthood.
Following years of neglect, Labour is turning the page, literally fixing the foundations of our schools so local children are in a safe environment where the can achieve and thrive.
I’m delighted that children from Scarborough and Whitby are going to be helped by this Government investment."
The funding announcement follows a series of other initiatives designed to boost education and improve outcomes across the local area. This includes Mission Coastal, described as a pioneering project to improve outcomes for young people, which is being piloted locally following campaigning by Ms Hume. Scarborough is one of only two seaside towns to be included in the pilot project, alongside Hastings.
In addition to the infrastructure funding, free breakfast clubs have recently been launched in six local schools, and an expanded free school meals programme is expected to support over 4,000 children across the Scarborough and Whitby constituency.
Ms Hume added:
"Alongside measures free breakfast clubs, free school meals and safer schools, Labour is setting children up for the best start in life."
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said:
"The defining image of the school estate under the previous government was children sitting under steel props to stop crumbling concrete falling on their heads. It simply isn't good enough.
Parents expect their children to learn in a safe warm environment. It's what children deserve, and it is what we are delivering.
This investment is about more than just buildings - it's about showing children that their education matters, their futures matter, and this government is determined to give them the best possible start in life."
