Local volunteer rescue team called out after 40 foot fall.
Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team (SRMRT) responded promptly to a call from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust to assist in a critical rescue operation near Thomason Foss waterfall on Saturday.
A patient had fallen approximately 40 feet from a footpath, necessitating immediate medical attention and careful extraction from a steep gorge.
Local team members arrived swiftly at the scene, where they conducted an initial assessment and began administering medical treatment to the injured individual.
"We are grateful for the quick response from our team members, who worked diligently to provide care before the ambulance service paramedics arrived," a spokesperson from the SRMRT stated.
Once the ambulance service personnel were on site, the teams collaborated effectively to provide pain relief, apply splints, and package the patient into a vacuum mat. This preparation was crucial for the subsequent extraction process. The patient was then carefully placed onto a bell rescue stretcher for the challenging journey downstream and up the steep gorge to the awaiting ambulance at the roadside.
"This operation required not only medical expertise but also teamwork and coordination," the spokesperson added. "We wish the patient a speedy recovery as they are transported to the hospital for further treatment."
The rescue operation involved 83 volunteer member hours, highlighting the commitment and dedication of the SRMRT in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals in the North York Moors National Park. The incident underscores the importance of mountain rescue teams in providing swift and effective responses in emergency situations.
Responding to a post on social media the patient said:
"Thank you all so much, all you guys were brilliant, could have just been the fantastic pain relief but I barely felt a bump on the way to the ambulance.
I can’t express my gratitude, but I am home now and somehow not one broken bone, not even a fracture???? How, I have no clue, but you guys certainly insured a safe and not to mention comfy ride back.
Thank you to everyone else wishing on my recovery and that was involved."
