Scarborough and District Mencap is joining thousands of organisations across the UK to celebrate the crucial contribution of its fifteen volunteers during the forty-second annual Volunteers' Week.
Scarborough and District Mencap is marking the forty-second annual Volunteers' Week by honouring the dedication, passion, and hard work of its local helpers.
Running this year from Monday the first of June to Sunday the seventh of June 2026, the UK-wide celebration sees thousands of charities and voluntary organisations coming together.
The aim of the week is to formally recognise the vital contributions that volunteers make to their local communities across the country.
This year, the Scarborough-based charity is shining a spotlight on its own team of fifteen dedicated volunteers, who consistently go above and beyond for the cause.
To show their deep appreciation for this ongoing commitment, Scarborough and District Mencap will be gathering their team together for a special drop-in lunch.
Alongside this daytime celebration, the charity is also planning an evening gathering to further celebrate their efforts and foster a sense of community among the helpers.
The charity has highlighted the immense impact of its team, noting that the local community benefits from more than one hundred hours of voluntary help every single week.
These crucial hours of service are spent across the Scarborough and District Mencap Charity Shop and Hub, as well as at their dedicated centre, Brookleigh.
The volunteers undertake a wide variety of essential tasks to keep the charity running smoothly on a day-to-day basis.
Their daily retail responsibilities include helping to carefully check, sort, prepare, price, and sell a variety of donated goods.
In addition to these important shop duties, the volunteers play a vital, hands-on role in directly supporting individuals with a learning disability.
They help these individuals to socialise, build confidence, and participate in various engaging activities.
According to the charity, all of this hard work directly supports their 'ACE' programme.
The 'ACE' programme specifically focuses on helping people with a learning disability to achieve Active Community Engagement.
Volunteers' Week has been running every year since 1984, providing a crucial annual opportunity to thank volunteers and recognise the immense value of their time and skills.
The long-running campaign is designed to highlight both the diversity and the unity of volunteer work taking place across the United Kingdom.
Many organisations taking part in the celebrations aim to foster stronger connections between large national bodies and smaller grassroots groups.
Ultimately, the week is about celebrating the spirit of volunteering that enriches local communities year after year.
The national initiative is led by the UK Volunteering Forum.
This forum is a collaborative partnership between Volunteer Scotland, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, the Wales Council for Voluntary Action, and Volunteer Now in Northern Ireland.
The UK Volunteering Forum said:
"Volunteers bring a richness to organisations across the country. There is no better time to recognise the diversity of our volunteers and celebrate the difference that volunteering makes than during Volunteers’ Week. Without volunteers many charities just simply could not function, with so many people giving up their time and going above and beyond. The week is a chance for all of us to show just how vital they are to charities and communities everywhere."
