Scalby Charity Walk Get's New Route

Scalby's annual charity walk will be returning this Easter

2023 will see the 62nd outing for the Scalby Walk and it will be held on Monday, 10 April 2023.

The six mile walk is a local tradition going back over 60 years

Michael Whiteley is one of the organisers, he says it has a long standing heritage in the village.

This year’s charity is the SPARKS PROJECT. Sparks was established in October 2018 to tackle the community problems in Barrowcliff, Scarborough, which is in the top 10% of the most deprived areas in the country.

Sparks works with many troubled and complex families and individuals facing poverty, social problems, crime, antisocial behaviour, drug & alcohol abuse, domestic violence and a range of mental health issues.

In 2020, Sparks expanded into Eastfield and is the first organisation of its kind to be embedded within these two communities.

As usual this year's event will see the presentation of cups for the fastest walkers in many categories and prizes for Fancy Dress. Under 18 walkers get a signed certificate designed specifically for the walk by the local scouts.

Michael says the walk attracts a wide range of entrants.

The 6 walk starts and ends at The Plough Inn Scalby. The route includes refreshment breaks for ½ a pint of bitter, lager or squash at 4 pubs on the route The Three Jolly Sailors (Burniston), The Red Lion (Cloughton), The Blacksmiths Arms (Cloughton) and The Oak Wheel (Burniston).

Michael says this years route will see a few changes from last year

Starting off at the Plough Inn, Scalby, at staggered start times from 10.30 am, each entrant must complete a 6 mile route by walking only – that means no running!

This year the route has been changed to avoid two busy and potentially dangerous road crossings. The journey from The Blacksmiths Arms now makes use of the old Whitby to Scarborough railway line (called the Cinder Track).

This year's walk will also see a couple of different start times.

Michael says the support from the local community for the annual walk is first rate, he says the local pubs play a key part in keeping the event going.

Michael says there is a lot of work required to stage the event
