A musical telling the story of Whitby RNLI hero Henry Freeman has it's debut in the town tonight.
"Facing the Waves" brings together the iconic local Victorian hero, alongside a present day RNLI volunteer.
Director, Antony Bellekom says the cast have worked hard to portray the challenges facing RNLI crew members.
Anthony says the story of Henry Freeman has become legendary on the Yorkshire Coast.
In preparing the show, Dogwood, conducted numerous interviews with communities including Whitby, Saltburn and Bridlington. They captured the memories, experiences and expectations of those living by the coast to create an authentic tale.
Antony says melding Henry's story with the experiences of modern day lifeboat crew has been a fascinating experience and is pleased that they have been able to produce the performances in the RNLI's 200th year.
Free tickets have been given out to local youngsters for performances in Whitby tonight and tomorrow and in Glaisdale on Sunday through a partnership with Whitby Seafoods.
Antony says they are keen for local youngsters to experience live theatre.
The new musical has been put together by Whitby based Dogwood productions and features an impressive cast and crew.
Next weekend the production will move to Bridlington where it will be performed inside the lifeboat station.
Anjie Rook RNLI Associate Director, who is overseeing the RNLI’s 200th anniversary programmes, said:
‘We are incredibly grateful to Dogwood Productions for supporting the RNLI with their musical Facing the Waves which will be performed in a range of venues across the North and East, particularly as we celebrate our bicentenary in 2024.
‘For 200 years, it is people who have made the RNLI what it is – from our brave volunteer lifesavers who risk their lives to save others, to the committed fundraisers and generous event organisers and donors – events like these are crucial to funding our 24/7 lifesaving service.’
The show is being performed at The Chapel On The Hill, Brunswick Street, Whitby on Friday 20th September at 7.30pm and on Saturday 21st at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. It is also being performed at The Robinson Institute, Glaisdale on Sunday 22nd September at 7.30pm.
