Scarborough’s recently reopened Golden Ball public house is set to undergo a set of external repairs and renovations.
The Golden Ball pub at Scarborough’s Sandside reopened last week after a long-term closure, and owner Samuel Smith Old Brewery is set to re-decorate the exterior of the taproom.
The seaside inn has a rich history, according to submitted plans, which state that “its current location on Sandside dates back to at least 1857”.
All the works, which were recently approved by North Yorkshire Council, “have been designed so as to respect and restore the character and appearance of the half-timbered building”.
The brewery said it takes “great pride in restoration of its estate, including reinstatement of original features when considering all proposed development work”.
The North Yorkshire-based chain’s public houses are known for their strict policies, which ban the use of mobile phones and laptops, and for the absence of TVs and music.
“Friendly pub conversation is encouraged – no swearing! – together with the responsible enjoyment of our beers,” the company’s website states.
According to the planning application, there are no disabled toilet facilities at the pub and “as there is no space to incorporate a designated disabled toilet, ambulant facilities will be provided to one cubicle in both the ladies and gents toilets”, while noting that the rear access is level with the internal floor.
The Golden Ball is in a building with “an early 18th-century core, which was later remodelled in the early 20th century by architect Frank Tugwell, adding gables, half-timbering, and oriel windows,” according to submitted plans.
