8 Year old Evie Hodgson needs a new bone marrow donor after the withdrawal of the only match found so far.
Earlier this year, during lockdown, Evie's parents were given the devastating news that their daughter was suffering from a rare blood disorder known as aplastic anaemia and that she would need a bone marrow transplant in order to survive.
Initially it seemed that Evie had been lucky as a match for the transplant was found quickly and the procedure was planned to take place in August. But just a few weeks before the planned transplant date Evie's one and only 10/10 donor pulled out of donating their Stem Cells.
The news was totally unexpected and her family and friends say they are devastated.
Evie now needs a new donor to come forwards, but because there is no match currently on the register she needs people to sign up for a swab test to see if they are a match.
Evie's family say the 8 year old knows what is happening to her and understands the significance of her donor pulling out of the transplant that she, her parents and her doctors had been preparing for. On a Facebook page set up to encourage people to sign up to become a donor Evie's family say..
"Please please register for a swab kit and join the donor register. Please spread the word to family, friends and strangers to apply for a swab kit and please please share this page and help us to generate more awareness Stem Cell donation is totally different to organ donation. Less invasive and it's just like giving blood in many cases. Such an easy thing to do to save someone's life! We have attached some links below, please take a look and consider joining the register 🙏"
Earlier this week Evie started immune suppressant treatment which will hopefully buy her time to find her "hero" donor.
Speaking from her hospital room Evie had this message for everybody
'please don't forget to send your swab kits back' so many of you have ordered your swab kits but you will not go onto the register until you swab and send them back.'
Potential donors can register for a swab test kit either with the Anthony Nolan trust if they are under 30 years old or with DKMS if they are over 30.
Under the age of 30, register with Anthony Nolan https://www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-you-could-save-life/donate-your-stem-cells
Over 30 years old, register with DKMS https://www.dkms.org.uk/en/register-now
