Whitby Town Council is inviting residents and visitors to line the streets this Saturday for a historic parade as the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers exercise their newly granted Freedom of the Town.
Whitby Town Council is inviting both residents and visitors to line the streets of the coastal town this Saturday, the 25th of July, to witness a historic military event.
The Freedom of Whitby Parade will mark the formal granting of the Honorary Freedom of the Town to 1 Close Support Battalion, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, commonly known as 1 CS Bn REME.
According to the town council, the Freedom of the Town is the highest civic honour that they can bestow upon an organisation or individual.
The upcoming parade represents the formal granting and the exercise of that prestigious honour. The event will see serving soldiers marching through the streets of Whitby with their colours flying, bands playing, drums beating, and bayonets fixed.
The ceremonial procession will assemble at the Church Street Car Park before officially setting off at 11.30am.
From there, the marching personnel will proceed along a route that takes them over the Swing Bridge, along New Quay Road, and through Bagdale and Chubb Hill.
The parade is expected to arrive at Pannett Park at approximately 12.00 noon, which is where the official Freedom Parade Ceremony will take place.
The Town Mayor of Whitby, Councillor Sandra Turner, said:
"This will be a proud and memorable occasion for Whitby. The Freedom Parade provides an opportunity for our community to recognise the outstanding service of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, celebrate their long-standing relationship with our town, and show our appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice of all those who serve in our Armed Forces.
I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and support this special civic event and give 1 CS Bn REME a fitting Whitby welcome as they exercise the Freedom of the Town."
To facilitate the safe passage of the parade, a rolling road closure will be in operation along the entire route throughout the morning.
Motorists are being asked to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid disruption and to follow the directions provided by event stewards and police officers who will be on duty on the day.
