North Yorkshire Police responded to a crucial tip-off from a member of the public on Thursday regarding a suspected drunk driver in Whitby.
The report indicated that a man was about to drive his car after consuming alcohol at a local pub.
Police arrived at the scene around 3pm and quickly located the driver in question. The individual was stopped but did not provide a sample at the roadside, leading to his immediate arrest. Following his arrest, the man underwent a breath test in custody, which revealed a reading of 52 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath—significantly above the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
The 57-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the legal alcohol limit and has since been released on bail as the investigation continues.
In a statement, North Yorkshire Police emphasised the importance of public vigilance in preventing potential incidents on the roads.
“We’d like to take this opportunity as a reminder to always report to us - we hear you and we act. It’s so important that we’re able to prevent incidents, not just react to them,
If you ever see anyone about to drive and you know or suspect they’ve been drinking, please call 999. Thank you.”
They urged anyone witnessing a similar situation to contact them immediately by calling 999.
