Unpaid carers and charity workers in Snainton have been honoured with a special visit from Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal to celebrate three decades of local community support.
Unpaid carers and their families received royal recognition during a special afternoon tea event in Snainton on Monday.
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited Carers Plus Yorkshire to celebrate the organisation's thirtieth anniversary and its ongoing work supporting individuals who look after loved ones in the local community.
Advocacy for unpaid carers has been a long-standing focus for The Princess Royal. She originally founded The Princess Royal Trust for Carers in 1991, an organisation which has since evolved into the Carers Trust. Carers Plus Yorkshire operates as a network partner within this wider national framework.
Upon her arrival in Snainton, the royal guest was formally presented by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Sir Christopher Legard.
The official welcoming party brought together key local figures, including the Member of Parliament for Scarborough and Whitby, Alison Hume, and North Yorkshire Council’s Corporate Director for Health and Adult Services, Abigail Barron. They were joined by Carers Plus Yorkshire's Vice Chair of Trustees, Dorn Pryce, and Chief Executive Officer, Elizabeth McPherson.
The pressing issues facing modern carers formed a central part of the royal visit. The Princess Royal spoke at length with charity leaders about the latest developments in their support network and the specific hurdles that young carers face today.
Conversations also highlighted the ongoing challenges families experience when trying to access vital respite care.
During these discussions, Elizabeth McPherson detailed the charity's community-focused model. She explained how the organisation prioritises taking support directly out into local communities and into the homes of unpaid carers, rather than operating from a single dedicated centre.
The Chief Executive Officer also outlined the vast geographical area the charity covers and emphasised the critical importance of securing funding to maintain a team of skilled and experienced staff capable of handling increasingly complex care needs.
Following the formal introductions, The Princess Royal moved into the main hall to meet the people directly impacted by the charity's work.
She spent time greeting and speaking with a wide range of guests, including adult carers, armed forces carers, dedicated volunteers, and staff members. These conversations allowed the royal visitor to hear first-hand accounts of the daily realities of unpaid caring and the tangible difference the charity makes to families.
To draw the formal proceedings to a close, The Princess Royal was invited to cut a special anniversary celebration cake. She brought a light-hearted touch to the moment, quipping to the gathered crowd that the cake would only be cut if the guests were actually going to eat it.
