As part of their ongoing commitment to this year’s Christmas drink and drug drive campaign, North Yorkshire Police have so far made 133 arrests.
The campaign launched on Monday 01 December with officers releasing a hard-hitting social media reel to try and make people think about the choices that they have after consuming alcohol. Since then, they have been doing all they can to raise awareness and have also stepped up patrols in addition to routine patrols to catch those who are persistent at drink and drug driving.
Police say if you are concerned about the manner of driving from a vehicle which is travelling on a road then please do report this. If you believe it’s an emergency, then always call 999.
This year's campaign has used intelligence-led targeted stops as well as roadside checkpoints.
If you’ve been out drinking there is no way to know how much you can drink to stay under the legal limit, since it can depend on your weight, age and metabolism. You may also still be affected by alcohol the next day and are likely to lose your license if you are over the legal limit.
The consequences of drink or drug-driving could include:
Killing or seriously injuring yourself or someone else;
A minimum 12-month ban;
An unlimited fine;
A possible prison sentence;
A criminal record, which could affect your current and future employment;
An increase in your car insurance costs;
Difficulty travelling to countries such as the USA.
Whatever your plans for New Year, leave your keys at home and don’t be the reason that someone doesn’t make it back to their family. #howrugetting
