North Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation into a fire at a hay barn in Whitby, which they believe was started deliberately
The incident occurred on Green Lane between 7pm and 8pm on Sunday 23 March.
According to a statement released by North Yorkshire Police, the fire resulted in the destruction of a barn, farming equipment, and approximately 200 hay bales, with the damage being worth a considerable amount of money.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Sunday evening. North Yorkshire Police reported that they were in attendance at a barn fire near to New Gardens, off Green Lane, with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue working to extinguish the blaze. At the time, police asked the public not to attend the area and to keep all access roads open for emergency services. The fire service also requested that residents nearby return to their properties.
An update from North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue on Monday confirmed the scale of the fire, stating that a large hay barn measuring 25m x 10m, containing approximately 200 bales of hay, was well alight. Firefighters from Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay were initially mobilised, and additional appliances were requested from Lythe, Scarborough, and Danby, along with a water bowser from Tadcaster and supporting appliances from Malton and Thirsk. Crews worked to set up jets and protect surrounding property.
Following further investigation, the police are now treating the incident as arson and are appealing for information. North Yorkshire Police are asking anyone who was in the Green Lane area on Sunday evening and may have seen any vehicles or anyone acting suspiciously to come forward.
