A motorhome stolen during a burglary near Whitby has been recovered in Hartlepool after the owner tracked its signal and officers used a drone to pinpoint its exact location.
A motorhome that was stolen from the outskirts of Whitby has been successfully recovered by police using a drone to search from the skies.
The vehicle was taken during a two-in-one burglary in the village of Ugthorpe, which is located on the northern outskirts of Whitby. According to officers, the theft occurred overnight between Monday the 13th of April and Tuesday the 14th of April.
The recovery of the vehicle took place on Friday the 24th of April, following the quick thinking of both the owner and officers from the Hartlepool Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Cleveland Police stated that the owner had previously installed a tracking device on the motorhome. After the theft, the owner followed the tracker's signal which led to Hartlepool, where they then attended Hartlepool Police Station to seek urgent assistance from local officers.
Upon receiving the information, a Police Community Support Officer quickly launched a police drone. The aerial device was used to pan over the sky towards the specific location pinpointed by the owner's tracking device, which directly led to the successful location of the stolen motorhome.
North Yorkshire Police have publicly praised the brilliant work carried out by their colleagues at Cleveland Police. They confirmed that they are delighted that the victim will get the motorhome back, noting that this will happen once a full forensic examination has been completed by investigators.
PCSO Mark Say of the Hartlepool Neighbourhood Policing Team said:
"I’m so pleased that we managed to locate the stolen vehicle for the victim. The drone is a fantastic way to search the area quickly, and we use it in many different scenarios to fight crime, help us find and arrest criminals and keep people safe."
North Yorkshire Police are now urging any witnesses, or anyone with information that could assist the ongoing investigation, to come forward and help them catch those responsible.
Members of the public who can assist with the investigation should call North Yorkshire Police on 101.
