A long-serving swim teacher who has been poolside for 50 years at Ryedale Swim and Fitness Centre has been celebrating reaching the landmark.
Jennifer Dale, from Pickering, has worked as a lifeguard and swim teacher since the centre opened in 1974.
The 74-year-old has taught 1,000 different learners this year alone and while she thrives on teaching beginners of all ages, she enjoys Preschool Stage 1 through to Stage 3 in particular.
Ryedale Swim and Fitness Centre, run by award-winning operator Everyone Active in partnership with North Yorkshire Council, held a special presentation for Jennifer at their open day on Wednesday, October 30.
Jennifer received a card full of messages from colleagues and customers, alongside a bouquet of flowers and other gifts as a thank you for her dedication over the past 50 years.
And customers have also been expressing their thanks for the impact Jennifer has had on their families’ lives.
Customer Becky Cumming said:
“Jennifer – what a lady! She taught me to swim 25 years ago and was the one lady I would never misbehave with.
She also taught both my children. Once, during a lesson, my daughter decided to not listen and instead follow her woggle into the deep end. Jennifer jumped in fully clothed and saved her – what a hero.”
Peter Smith, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said:
“Jennifer’s commitment to the job is truly remarkable.
Her knowledge and experience has proved invaluable to generations of swimmers at Ryedale Swim and Fitness Centre and she is a fantastic ambassador for swimming locally. We know how lucky we are to have had Jennifer at this pool for all these years and I’m sure everyone who has been taught by her is hugely appreciative of what she has done.”
