North Yorkshire Council's Executive Member for Highways and Transportation has addressed the situation regarding rural bus transport in the region.
Malcolm Taylor says he's well aware of the problems around North Yorkshire's local bus services:
"With the Rural Bus Franchising scheme, I met the Mr. Lightowler, the bus minister came to visit the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. I think we spent 90% of the day in York and we came to Malton for 20 minutes, which to me just summed up. No, they weren't stuck on the 64, but the point I wanted to make is, I'm sure every council in this room gets representations from their constituents, their electorate in relation to the lack of buses.
"And even when buses are scheduled, they don't always turn up."
York and North Yorkshire are part of a Labour government pilot for a new rural bus franchising model to create more reliable and frequent services.
Mr Taylor, a Conservative councillor, says when a different bus provider took over, in his area, standards went down:
"Experience we have in my part of the world, the local reliant bus company went out, dropped their routes, and I think we had a 25% delivery on time. At one stage. It has gone up, I think to about 60%, but when people have got hospital appointments, they cannot rely on those bus services. They've given half a million pounds for rural bus franchising projects pilot scheme. Sorry, have people seen the five areas? I'm still trying to get my head around whether the half a million pound is to do a tabletop exercise or whether it's actually going to deliver some services and that's a question I will be asking the mayor next time we meet."
