North Yorkshire Police have announced a notable 6% reduction in total crime reported over the past year, affirming the county's position as the safest police area in the country.
Deputy Chief Constable Scott Bisset of North Yorkshire Police highlighted the positive trend, stating,
"Our current change on the previous year of total crime reported was 6%". He also acknowledged prior reductions in crime and expressed satisfaction that "the latest data that we've got nationally puts North Yorkshire as the safest county or police area in the country". This achievement sees North Yorkshire move to 43rd out of 43 areas in terms of the lowest crime rate per thousand population, an improvment from its previous 42nd position. Deputy Chief Constable Bisset attributed this success to "some of the really hard work from all our people" and expressed a desire for this trend to continue.
Beyond just reductions in reported crime, North Yorkshire also boasts the highest positive charge and summons rate across England and Wales, according to Deputy Chief Constable Bisset. The latest figures show North Yorkshire at a 13.3% positive outcome rate, which was the highest nationally compared to a national average of 9.6% as of January 2025.
The police force says it is ambitious to further improve this figure, aiming for a 20% positive outcome on all reported crime, with Deputy Chief Constable Bisset emphasising that "that means victims are getting the justice that they deserve".
Looking at specific crime categories, overall Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) incidents have continued to decline year-on-year, showing an 8% reduction this year compared to the previous year, following a 15% reduction two years prior. However, an analysis of command areas reveals a mixed picture. While the City Command Area saw a 15% decrease in ASB and the County Command Area experienced a 9.8% decrease, the Coast Command Area reported a 5% increase in ASB, accounting for 68 more reports.
In terms of recording practices, North Yorkshire Police demonstrate a high level of crime recording: 93.9% of all reported crime (excluding fraud) is recorded, with 95.2% of all violent offences and 96.2% of sexual offences being recorded. Furthermore, arrest figures show a slight increase, with arrests being 0.6% higher than the previous year.
