Jonathan Dyson has sought to clarify how the Fire Brigade deal with automatic firm alarms in North Yorkshire.
North Yorkshire's Chief Fire Officer has sought to clarify an extension of rules around automatic fire alarms.
He says nothing's being turned off.
Instead Jonathan Dyson said:
"We're holding people to account for the responsible persons of those premises and making sure that we support them, that we educate them and where necessary, it is the only part where we have an enforcement perspective within the communities and that's what the automatic fire alarms was about. It then frees up the time for us and our staff for training.
"It reduces cost for the response that we're doing and reduces the risk to the communities as the appliances are driving around. This also brings us in line with Regional and National Fire and Rescue Services. Automatic fire alarms still represent around 50% of fire and rescue calls nationally. Now that's enormous and clearly, there are still a number of work streams we need to do and a number of hours we need to step into to make sure that we address those.
"There will always be automatic fire alarms, there will always be issues."
He also emphasised that public safety will not be compromised:
"Where there is life risk or where it is a fire, we will of course respond and we will extinguish that fire where it is. We highlight the need for education and enforcement where required. We ultimately work with our communities. We haven't had to have any significant enforcement in North Yorkshire for a long period of time.
"We're taking that as a positive position that we're working with businesses to do that."
