North Yorkshire Moors Railway launches urgent Bridge 42 Appeal to save a vital link and secure the future of the heritage railway.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) have launched the Bridge 42 Appeal - a vital fundraising initiative to repair a bridge between Grosmont Level Crossing and the tunnel. The historic structure is one of over 30 vital bridges and culverts that carries trains and passengers every year through the stunning landscapes of the North York Moors.
Built in 1836 for the original Whitby and Pickering railway, Bridge 42 is celebrating its 180th anniversary in 2026 and is a significant monument in its own right. A Grade II listed structure which connects Goathland and Grosmont Village, it is the busiest bridge at the heritage railway, as it handles all locomotives entering and leaving Grosmont depot, with approximately 10,000 locomotive or train movements each year.
After nearly two centuries of service in a harsh moorland environment, Bridge 42 urgently needs major repairs to its stone and brick arch masonry. Detailed inspections have been carried out and show that significant structural work is required to ensure the bridge remains safe, reliable, and fit for the future.
Repair work will include scaffolding and track removal, followed by work to strengthen the brick arch, protect it from water damage, and secure drainage before the rail infrastructure is re-instated for trains to once again run over.
Restoring Bridge 42 is a complex and costly engineering project that requires specialist materials, skilled contractors, and careful working in a sensitive environment. As a registered charity (#501388), the NYMR relies on the generosity of supporters to fund projects of this scale. It says donations will directly support the repair and strengthening of Bridge 42, helping to protect the long-term future of the railway, preserve an important piece of engineering heritage, and keep steam trains running through the North York Moors for generations to come.
