A new project is launching in Eastfield, offering residents a unique way to help their community and get help in return.
The Legacy Timebank, based at the Legacy Link Community Centre in Eastfield, is a free exchange of time and skills.
Timebanking: How It Works
The concept is simple: members volunteer their time to help someone and earn a “time-credit” for each hour they contribute. These credits can then be exchanged for an hour of help for themselves.
- Any type of help can be offered, and everyone is welcome to join.
- Need someone to knit a cardigan for your grandchild? Someone in the timebank might be able to help.
- Can you offer a couple of hours of hairdressing services? Donate your time and earn credits.
- Need your prescriptions picked up or want a chat over a cup of tea? Timebank members can help with that too.
Tracey White is from the Eastfield Community Centre who are co-ordinating the scheme.
The Benefits of Timebanking
The timebank provides numerous benefits to both individuals and the community:
- Provides a structured way to volunteer and give back to the community.
- Connects people with diverse skills and abilities.
- Encourages social inclusion and reduces loneliness.
- Offers a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
- Time spent volunteering in the timebank can be declared to the Department for Work and Pensions. This may reduce the number of hours individuals on benefits are required to spend seeking employment.
Tracey White thinks there will be a lot of local interest.
The Legacy Timebank is hosting a launch event on Tuesday 21st January between 12 pm and 3 pm at the Linkwalk Community Centre in Eastfield.
Attendees can enjoy hot drinks, soup, and a roll while learning more about the project. Sign-up will be available at the event, or people can take information away and consider joining later. The timebank welcomes members from Eastfield and the surrounding areas, including Seamer, and Crossgates.
If you can't make the event you can still get involved. Visit the timebank website at https://tol2.timebanking.org/LegacyTimeBank/ to register and access the online platform where you can post requests or offers for help.
You can also contact the timebank by emailing thelegacytimebank@gmail.com or calling 01723 583143.
