New Community Ping Pong Table for Scarborough

Best bats are at the ready for the VIP launch of Scarborough’s new community ping pong table in South Cliff’s Prince of Wales Gardens.

On Tuesday June 28th, Scarborough Mayor, Eric Broadbent will officially launch the new table and demonstrate it is never too late to learn table tennis, joining the community and two top junior players for a game.

The idea for a community table, free to use and to encourage everyone to play, was inspired by the delight of local resident Jane Leigh’s grandchildren. They had been playing table tennis in her garden.

Jane explains:

“Aged 8-16 years, they were having a go. I witnessed encouragement, empathy, teaching, learning, focus, patience, perseverance, courage, and resilience all while the air was filled with the sound of fun and laughter!  I want every child to have that experience.”

"I pay homage to my friend Anne Campbell whose spontaneous generosity to donate towards funding a table gave me the spur to ensure it materialised. "

With practical help from the borough’s council, and the support of Friends of South Cliff Gardens, the table is now entertaining locals and holiday visitors in the park opposite the Red Lea Hotel. It has been in constant use since it landed recently. The Red Lea Hotel has also volunteered to host the bats and balls.

Jane adds:

”It really is for everyone! Please pop along to the launch, bring a picnic and take the chance to play and to learn some top tips from Scarborough’s Table Tennis Premier Club head coach Ashley Hodgson, with talented local junior players Mia Longmann, the under 11 national champion 2019  and Louis Fell who has represented Yorkshire."

Scarborough Mayor, Councillor Eric Broadbent with Weaponness and Ramshill Ward Councillor Rich Maw, will cut a ceremonial ribbon to mark the community table’s official launch at 5.30pm on Tuesday June 28th in Prince of Wales Gardens, Prince of Wales Terrace, Scarborough. The table can be found in the park, opposite the Red Lea Hotel.
