There is a fresh appeal for people on the Yorkshire Coast to become hosts for Ukrainian families displaced by the Russian war.
The Scarborough Sunflower appeal group, set up to support Ukrainian refugees in Scarborough and the surrounding areas, has renewed its appeal for sponsors to help secure safe places for Ukrainians after the renewed Russian offensive.
Iryna is from the city of Dnipro, she is living in Scarborough with her two daughters, she says there are many more families who still need to escape the fighting.
At the moment there are around 300 Ukrainians living in the Scarborough area, mostly mothers and their children.
But with the Ukrainian family scheme ending and a drop in media interest the group say the number of new sponsors coming forward has almost stopped completely.
Iryna says the information she gets from family members still in Ukraine is that living conditions are deteriorating especially for children.
Iryna says:
“If you have a spare room, own property or have a holiday flat, you could become a sponsor. What you’re doing is allowing someone or even a family to leave the war zone and come to a place of safety. You’re allowing a child to have a childhood without sleeping in a basement in fear for their lives.
Most Ukrainians already here have picked up jobs and moved into their own accommodation. But we need sponsors to come forward and enable people to be afforded that place of safety"
Iryna accepts that being a sponsor is not always easy. but says it makes an enormous difference to those families that are able to escape the war-zone.
Residents who are interested in finding out more information are urged to contact the Scarborough Sunflower Appeal group on Facebook or the Scarborough Salvation Army on 01723 378603.
Iryna says there is lots of help and advice available for potential sponsors.
