Neigh Problems For Equine Extension Near Scarborough

A new horse riding arena can be built in a North Yorkshire village following the council’s approval of plans.

The construction of an ‘equine ménage’ at Eastgate House Farm at Stoney Haggs Road, in Seamer, near Scarborough, can go ahead after getting the green light from North Yorkshire Council.

Alexis Simpson’s plan will see the installation of an “additional equine ménage adjacent to the existing one to allow for horse exercise and jump practice alongside hosting occasional equine events”.

The scheme received support from local residents and the parish council and planning officers described the development as “appropriate”, adding that it will not impact the openness of the countryside.

According to submitted plans, Eastgate House Farm was built by Mr and Mrs Simpson after receiving planning permission in 2007.

The ménage will measure 60m by 40m and will be enclosed by a 1.5m timber post and rail fence.

The proposal does not include any additional external lighting and a condition was included to “ensure this remains”.

Ms Simpson said that small-scale equine events would occasionally be held between March and October and that attendance would be by invitation only.

No objections were made by the Highway Authority of the local parish council and four letters of support were sent by members of the public.

Commenting on the plans, Laura Rafferty-Trow said:

“The proposed development supports local grassroots equestrian sport, particularly due to its proposed size, which allows for a full outdoor showjumping course with an appropriately surfaced area for warm-ups in the existing arena.

“This is a welcome investment given the current economic climate and will support the mental health of a section of the rural community by supporting hobbies, sport, social activities and outdoor time.”

Council planning officers said the visual impact of the scheme was considered acceptable and that there would not be an unacceptable impact on the amenity of nearby properties.

The application was approved by North Yorkshire Council on Wednesday, subject to conditions including the approval of a full biodiversity gain plan.
