National Award for Bridlington Road Runners' Youth Coach

England Athletics have recognised the contribution made by Josh Taylor.

Bridlington Road Runners' junior section coach - Josh Taylor - has been named Leader of the Year in England Athletics' Volunteer Awards.

Josh took over the role of juniors coach during the pandemic and in those two years he has bolstered the membership of the club.

Martin Hutchinson is the club's chair - he says it's a well deserved accolade.

It was a special achievement for Josh and the club, made even more remarkable considering this time last year, Josh was involved in a serious road accident. His car skidded on ice and he was left fighting for his life.

Over the next 12 months, he got back to full fitness, returned to work as a refuse collector with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and then ran the Great North Run, raising money for the NHS teams who had saved his life.

John runs two training sessions per week, for ages 7 to 17, organises regular competitions and challenges, he says winning the national award was something of a surprise.

Josh won the Yorkshire and Humber Award in November and the citation read:

"Despite suffering serious injuries in a car crash, Josh’s commitment to his junior section has remained as firm as ever as he turns out to coach and inspire them twice a week come rain or shine, using a variety of techniques and running environments.

Already a LiRF, Josh has worked hard to increase his coaching knowledge by doing more courses, and his own recovery, exemplifying grit and determination, serves as an inspiration to all around him.

During lockdown the juniors worked in virtual teams with the seniors, and this in turn has led to them becoming a full part of the club family. Seniors in the club have been encouraged to develop coaching skills and as a result, junior membership is growing rapidly as Josh encourages them to focus on teamwork as well as individual excellence."

Club Chair - Malcolm Hutchinson - says the award reflects well on Josh and the Club.

Josh wasn't the only Yorkshire Coast winner at the awards ceremony. Run Scarborough were named as "Run Together Group of the Year"

The award recognises a RunTogether Group that has provided friendly, supportive and welcoming group running opportunities in their community over the last 12 months.

The judges said:

"As well as keeping its members connected and motivated during lockdown, Run Scarborough has also managed to organise a series of challenges for its members. One of the challenges included running a lap of Yorkshire, with a distance versus elevation challenge, and another saw runners tackle the top seven summits.

A key event included setting up a relay and endurance run that raised over £6,000 for Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue, despite taking place on the hottest weekend of the year.

The group prides itself on its community feel, with everyone happy to share knowledge and support each other. There is a broad span of abilities, so everyone has someone to run with, including visually impaired runners who have a plentiful supply of guides happy to run with them."
