Scarborough and Whitby MP, Alison Hume, is Calling for North Yorkshire Council to put in place an officer with specific responsibility for the Yorkshire Coast.
The MP's comments come after local councillors passed a motion calling on the council not to close Whitby's Cliff Lift without further studies of the issues affecting the lift shaft or a full public consultation.
A petition calling for the lift to be saved has been signed by over 5,600 people, a number equating to over a third of the population of Whitby.
Speaking about the Cliff Lift Alison Hume said:
"Whitby is proud of its heritage. Quite rightly so.
That’s why over one million people a year visit the town for holidays or days out. As well as being naturally beautiful, it respects its history and traditions. The iconic Cliff Lift, which first opened in 1931, encompasses both. It also provides equal access to the chalets and promenade.
Closed for the past three years, after corrosion was discovered, North Yorkshire Council has recommended the Whitby Cliff Lift is permanently decommissioned.I wrote to them in July, calling for local residents to be properly consulted and for further investigations to be carried out before a final decision is taken.
Like many others, including the 5,601 people who signed a petition launched by Councillor Phil Trumper, I hope the lift can be saved.
Councillors on the Whitby and Scarborough Area Committee Meeting have now supported a motion urging NYC not to remove the lift without undertaking further surveys.Anglo-American’s mining engineers previously found the lift shaft to be relatively dry despite previous reports of significant water ingress.
The handling of this matter illustrates why, I believe, NYC should appoint a senior officer with specific responsibility for Scarborough and Whitby. "
Speaking at the Scarborough and Whitby Area committee on Friday the MP said the issues raised by this summers moorland fires on the coast also highlight the need for more oversight of coastal issues.
"We need a dedicated officer.
We need a director of place for the coast and I think that the Langdale fire, has really highlighted the need for that."
