Most Common Crime in East Riding Force Area Revealed

The police force covering the East Riding have revealed the most common crimes people were arrested for in 2022.

The four most common offences people in Hull and the East Riding were arrested for in 2022 were all types of assault.

Figures from Humberside Police from a freedom of information request showed 861 arrests were made in connection with assaults that occasioned actual bodily harm.

A total of 837 arrests were made for actual bodily harm (ABH) assaults, with 730 in connection with common assault and 598 for recordable common assaults.

The four types of assault topped the list of the 30 most common offences people were arrested for from the start of 2022 to Monday, November 21.

Recordable offences refer to those which police are required to keep a record of, generally those which carry a prison sentence.

Assault occasioning actual bodily harm refers to when a person intentionally or recklessly assaults another, thereby causing actual bodily harm.

The connection between the two must be proved.

ABH refers to an assault that causes injury to the victim and it does not need to be serious but would be more than a push or a shove for example.

Common assault refers to when a person inflicts violence on someone or makes them think they are going to be attacked.

It does not have to involve physical violence and common assaults can include threats or spitting at someone.

After recordable common assaults, theft from a shop was the fifth most common offence with 376 arrests in 2022.

It was followed by criminal damage to property valued under £5,000 (recordable), with 359 arrests.

A total of 348 arrests were made for recordable thefts from shops, with other not-listed but Police National Computer (PNC) recordable offences numbering 338.

Failure to surrender to police or court bail at the appointed time (recordable) numbered 334 arrests, followed by driving a motor vehicle while above alcohol limit (recordable), 328.

Arrests for recordable affray, the use of threat of violence from one person to another which would make someone else at the scene fear for their safety, numbered 321.

Failures to appear for a warrant resulted in 318 arrests, with criminal damage to a dwelling numbering 303.

A total of 266 arrests were made over the possession of class B or C drugs and 255 were in connection with other types of criminal damage.
