A Government health minister has said he shares local concern about the closure of Eastfield Medical Centre’s building.
The flood-hit Eastfield Medical Centre’s (EMC) site, near Scarborough, has been closed since June.
The Minister of State for Care, Stephen Kinnock MP, has said he shares the “concern regarding the duration of the site’s closure, the impact on the staff who are working hard in difficult circumstances, and the need to ensure constituents affected by the closure can still access primary medical services”.
Last week, EMC said it would be able to provide a range of services from St Cecilia’s Day Centre in Eastfield.
Mr Kinnock said that the flooding suffered by the practice caused damage “estimated at over £400,000.”
He added: “The expectation is that the practice will not be able to move back to the premises until March 2026.”
Eastfield Medical Centre said its healthcare assistant would provide a range of essential services locally from St Cecilia’s, including blood tests, long-term condition reviews, stitch and clip removals, and other routine care appointments.
It added: “We are also in discussions regarding the possibility of a second clinical room at St Cecilia’s to help us further increase local access to care.”
Commenting on the other sites being used by the practice to deliver services, the minister for care, said:
"While these efforts and accommodations are commendable, I understand they should not be necessary.”
“I am in contact with Teresa Fenech, the acting chief executive of NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB, to seek assurances that the ICB is doing all it can to ensure that this is resolved as quickly as possible, and that residents can access the services they need.”
Mike Padgham, St Cecilia’s executive chairman, said:
“We will be very happy to help for as long as it takes and pay tribute to Eastfield Surgery staff for the way they have pulled out all the stops to continue the vital services, and Alison Hume as well for her efforts.
“I am so proud of our staff who also helped the community during the Covid pandemic.”
The Eastfield Medical Centre has said it will also continue to provide services from temporary locations, including St Catherine’s Hospice, Lawrence House Medical Centre, and Brook Square Surgery.
