Mayor Welcomes Boost to Grassroots Sports Facilities in North Yorkshire

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire has welcomed investment from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport into grassroots sports facilities.

The funding comes as part of a national package that is supporting 1,650 projects.

In York and North Yorkshire, a £739,000 investment from government has unlocked money already raised by local community organisations to get 44 schemes off the ground. This will ensure people from Bentham to Whitby, Selby to Stokesley, and communities everywhere in between, get access to improved local sport facilities.

The announcement comes ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, where York will be one of the host cities, and adds to the momentum of the UK and Ireland hosting UEFA EURO 2028. The funding will be boosted by an additional £98m over 2025/26.

Welcoming the funding, David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said

“Sport changed my life and still does every day. I want everyone in York and North Yorkshire to be able to have that same feeling. It’s great to see this investment into grassroots sports facilities in York and North Yorkshire.”

“As we get ready to host the Women’s Rugby World Cup in York this Summer, the support of the Government to make sure more people in across our region can get onto the pitch.”

Lisa Nandy MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said

"Sport tells our national story like few other things – bringing communities together, inspiring people of all ages, and showcasing Britain on the global stage.

“This investment in grassroots sport is not just about facilities – it’s about creating real opportunities. It will help build a clear pathway for the next generation of sporting talent to thrive in communities right across the UK, including in York and North Yorkshire, where local pride and sporting spirit run deep."
