Local Youngsters Benefit from Yorkshire Coast 10k Run

A number of local schools and groups have received money from last years McCain Yorkshire Coast 10K run.

Scarborough Athletic Running Club (SAC), who organise and run the McCain Yorkshire Coast 10K and Fun Run event, decided to donate the profits from the 2021 events to local schools and youth organisations.  The purpose of the donations is to promote sporting activity for children within the local area.

Alan Whelan and Danny Walls, YK10 Race Directors, commented:

"We wanted the event to have an immediate benefit to local children.  We discussed this with the club and decided that we would donate 100% of the 2021 profit.  We contacted over 45 schools and youth organisations and were please to help all those that responded. The schools reported a distinct impact of COVID on their pupil’s core strength, hand-eye coordination and general fitness.  We hope our equipment donations can help them in their exercise programmes."

Among the schools to benefit from the donations is St Augustine’s School, PE Lead Margaret Farrell said:

"We were thrilled to be contacted by Alan and Danny with the offer of SAC making a donation to help the school buy some sports equipment. As a small school, St Augustine’s has limited funds which means that we have to carefully plan where and how our sports budget is to be spent. We were delighted that the donation from SAC has enabled us to purchase some much needed badminton equipment. Every pupil at St Augustine’s accesses badminton and plays in badminton fixtures against other local schools. Alan and Danny took the time to come and present our sports captains Rosa Clay and Joseph Semourson and we really appreciate the kind donation."

Kerry Bointon, PE Lead at Pickering Infant School  said:

"The scooter boards will be a great addition to our PE resources. They will increase the opportunities for children to regularly develop their upper body and core strength. They will be used during PE sessions as part of our stability and balance activities that build a foundation of movement skills for our young children."

Eleanor Waller is PE Lead at Northstead Primary, she added:

"Alan was able to present the junior javelins at one of our Y5/6 assemblies.  The children are really excited to be able to use their new equipment.

Lindhead Primary School have used their donation to invest in high tech skipping ropes – the school uses skipping as a daily exercise for their students.  Danny Walls said –

"we were more than happy to be able to provide an electronic skipping rope for each student to help with this great way of exercising."

Rosie Collier, Head of PE at Braeburn Primary and Infant School said:

"'We are extremely thankful at Braeburn Primary School for the PE equipment kindly donated by SAC. It has been fantastic to see the children enjoying the equipment and developing their physical skills such as fine and gross motor skills. The agility set has worked fantastic at break time and lunch times developing children's communication and teamwork skills. We have a team of Year 6 Sports Leaders that are in charge of leading activities for children in lower year groups and they have been coming up with fantastic games to deliver using the equipment."

As well as providing kjit for local schools the money has also been used to support local youth organisations including the Eastern Area Sea Cadets. Lt (SCC) Gareth Davies MBE RNR said:

"Receiving the donation from SAC is so appreciated, it allows the unit to train a selection of our instructors in the RYA First Aid Instructors qualification, giving them a new opportunity to train our cadets along with others from across the North East/Eastern Area. It will allow us to give staff and cadets life skills in First Aid and the confidence to provide help if they ever found themselves in a first aid situation.

Support from organisations such as the SAC is invaluable in allowing this to happen and we thank them wholeheartedly."

ABC Burniston youth club also received funding from the run. Maria Kitching from the group said:

"Active Burniston and Cloughton were very pleased when SAC confirmed they were able to help our Youth Club with table tennis equipment.  We currently have over 100 members who will benefit from the donation."
