The literacy trust is continuing its summer programme of activities up and down the Yorkshire Coast.
During the summer holidays, many children and young people can experience 'summer learning loss' - where an extended break from school can lead to a drop in children's reading skills. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are disproportionately affected.
To address this challenge, the National Literacy Trust on the Yorkshire Coast have a programme of activity called ‘Storycraft Summer’. It comprises a series of free events throughout the summer holidays in local libraries which combine reading/storytelling and arts and crafts. The aim is to encourage children to read for pleasure during the school break to try and reduce a potential drop in reading engagement, while supporting parents and families with simple, fun and accessible reading activities that they can then do at home.
All the events are free and run with the sole aim of supporting children’s literacy on the Yorkshire Coast.
Helen Williams is the Literacy Trust's manager on the Yorkshire Coast:
There's a women inventors and designers workshop at Scarborough Library on Tuesday and Word Wizards workshop at Whitby Library on Thursday.
