Steve Johnson's journey from a young volunteer to Operations Manager reflects his lifelong passion for trains. Starting as an 11-year-old volunteer, he eagerly assisted with tasks such as cleaning carriages and clipping tickets. His dedication and skills led to an apprenticeship, where he mastered driving and maintaining historic locomotives.
Key contributions from Steve have include spearheading a major trackwork program, developing a safety management system, and building a strong team of staff and volunteers.
During the summer season, his enthusiasm is infectious as he drives his favourite locomotive, Neptune, and engages visitors with his extensive knowledge. According to VisitEngland, Tourism Superstars are "passionate about the destination they work in and set the bar high for the standard of service in England’s tourism industry".
Johnson has also introduced innovative programs like the “Flying Sconesman” and “Scarborough Fryer” to enhance the railway’s appeal. As an ambassador for the railway, he pursues publicity opportunities, ensuring the railway remains a cherished attraction. VisitEngland notes that nominees should "go above and beyond the call of duty to make the visitor experience memorable".
The public can cast their votes until 23 March 2025 to select the Tourism Superstar winner.
The winner will be announced during English Tourism Week 2025 (14-23 March).
The winner will be invited to attend the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2025 ceremony in June 2025.
