It's Bring a Pound to Work Day on the Yorkshire Coast

The annual fundraiser for Saint Catherine's is taking place today.

Hundreds of local business are taking part, with teams from Saint Catherine's, the Scarborough Business Ambassadors and This is the Coast taking to the roads to collect people's pound coins.

Ray Baird is the new Chief Exec at Saint Catherine's he says it's a great event.

This is the Coast will be broadcasting live from along the Yorkshire Coast as the collection teams visit the hundreds of firms who have signed up to take part in this year's event.

Ray Baird says having the support of the local community is vitally important for the organisation.

Jo Thompson, chair of Scarborough Business Ambassadors, said:

“We are delighted once again to support Saint Catherine's Hospice and This is the Coast with such an essential fundraiser which helps the hospice provide free services, costing them around £5million per year.

“Most of us have been directly or indirectly touched by cancer at some point in our lives and the commitment of Saint Catherine’s, in providing the best possible care and quality of life for those with life limiting illnesses as an inpatient or within the 1,600 square miles of North and East Yorkshire, is phenomenal.

“We would like to urge everyone living in Saint Catherine’s catchment to help us make Bring a Pound to Work Day 2023 the most successful yet - particularly a loud shout out to the business community, large, medium or small. For our part, we will visit businesses and organisations together with staff from the hospice and radio station to help receive your generous donations, whatever you can offer.

“Every pound that is raised helps to safeguard local services. Help us to share the spirit of kindness that Saint Catherine's symbolises, especially at this time, when are facing a double whammy of increased demand and cost pressures including inflation, rising energy bills and falling donations in general.”

Ray says the fundraising taking place today and across the year is enabling the hospice team to provide vital services for local people.

Ray adds that the challenge of fundraising is never ending, he says working with the community is a year round necessity for Saint Catherine's
