A heartwarming reunion took place in Humberside this week as retired police dog Quinta was welcomed back home by her former handler, PC Mick Tune
The poignant moment was made possible after a promise made by her new handler, PC Phil Lusby, to return Quinta to Mick upon her retirement.
Quinta, a talented police dog, joined the Humberside Police Dog Section eight years ago after arriving from Holland. During her service, she became renowned for her exceptional scent work and bravery, notably apprehending a suspect wielding a machete during a summer incident in Scunthorpe.
Mick, who initially worked in a different role within the police force, had always aspired to become a dog handler. His dream was realized when he was paired with Quinta, and the two formed a strong bond, both on and off duty.
During their time together, Quinta not only assisted in numerous operations but also became a cherished member of Mick's family, sharing a home with Mick and his wife, Sharon. Their life together was filled with affection, often leading to playful rivalry over Mick's attention. "It was often a game over who was on the receiving end of Mick’s hugs,".
Tragically, in 2022, Sharon was diagnosed with cancer, prompting Mick to take early retirement to care for her. However, Quinta, still young and in her prime, continued her service under PC Lusby, who vowed to ensure that Mick and Sharon would have the first opportunity to adopt Quinta upon her retirement.
Throughout her tenure with Phil, Quinta achieved significant accolades, including a win at the regional police dog trials in West Yorkshire in March 2024, followed by a commendable performance at the National police dog trials in Scotland later that year. Mick and Sharon proudly attended these events to support the duo.
Sadly, Sharon passed away in February 2025, leaving Mick to navigate his grief without her. However, the bond between Mick and Quinta proved to be a source of comfort during this difficult time. Upon her retirement, Phil honored his promise, allowing Quinta to return to Mick.
Reflecting on the emotional day, Mick expressed, "What a day! A lot of emotions when Phil and Humberside Police passed over the lead and allowed Quinta to come back home to begin her retirement." He described Quinta as "an immense asset to both the force and Phil and myself who have been fortunate to be considered her handlers."
Mick also recalled the pride he felt watching Quinta compete at the National trials, a moment he shared with Sharon. "Today is however somewhat poignant as many will know what a special place Sharon held in her heart for this little dog," he said. Yet, he found solace in the belief that Sharon was watching over them, feeling her presence in the moment.
As Quinta settles back into her home, Mick is hopeful for a joyful retirement for his four-legged companion. "She ran up to me and gave me a ‘Mali hug’ - she remembers me. She's home,” he said, emphasizing the unique love and calming presence that animals can bring to those in mourning.
This reunion not only marks the end of Quinta's service but also the beginning of a new chapter in her life, reminding everyone of the special bond shared between police dogs and their handlers.
