Scarborough Yacht Club is inviting the public to a "get to know us" event, aiming to introduce sailing to more people and break down any barriers or worries about getting involved.
The event follows a previous successful event after the Scarborough Extreme event. According to Vice Commodore Tom Hill, the club wants to encourage more people to join.
The event is scheduled to kick off at 6:00 PM this evening (Feb 7th 2025), and will include a talk from club member Nick, who will explain the basics of sailing and what is needed to get started, as well as what is not needed.
Tom Hill will share stories of how sailing has taken him all over the world and allowed him to meet many different people. The aim is to show people how much fun sailing can be and to assure them that they are not too old to get involved, despite what they may think.
Tom Hill says "You don't need to have a yacht," to be involved with the club.

Tom says one of the hidden benefits of the club is the great view of the bay on offer from the clubhosue in Scarborough's lighthouse.
Tom says that the club has members who enjoy cruising along the coast and others who race more competitively. The racing takes place all year round, with races every couple of weeks in the winter and more frequently in the summer, including some weekend and midweek races.
Tom says that the yacht club is a "very welcoming place," and that it wants people to come and enjoy it, and to help the club continue to thrive.
