The arrival of the Nao Victoria, a full-scale replica of a 16th-century Spanish galleon, in Scarborough has been slightly delayed due to adverse weather conditions.
The vessel is now expected to arrive in Scarborough on Friday, 27 June, at approximately midday.
The Nao Victoria is a replica of the historic ship that achieved the monumental feat of becoming the first vessel to circumnavigate the globe more than 500 years ago. The original Nao Victoria embarked on its pioneering voyage from Seville in 1519, returning to the same city in 1522, after successfully navigating three oceans and charting a course along the edges of four continents.
Once it arrives, the replica will be moored at North Wharf Quay and will be open to the public from Friday, 27 June, at 5pm, and then daily between 10am and 8pm until Sunday, 6 July. The visit offers a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to step aboard and immerse themselves in maritime history. Onboard, visitors can take a self-guided tour of the decks to learn about the historical and social context surrounding "one of the greatest maritime feats in the history of navigation". There will also be a chance to speak with members of the crew, described as "real sailors who live as they did 500 years ago".
Anticipated Boost to Local Economy The Nao Victoria's visit is expected to draw thousands of visitors to Scarborough, following the successful stay of the Galeón Andalucía last summer, which also attracted a significant number of families to the town.
Cllr Mark Crane, Executive member for open for business and responsible for the visitor economy, expressed enthusiasm for the arrival. Cllr Crane stated that
"Scarborough is a hugely popular destination for families especially at this time of year and it’s great to be able to add the Nao Victoria to the town’s offering this summer"
"There was a real buzz and feel-good atmosphere around the town during the Galeón Andalucía’s visit last summer, and I’m sure it will generate similar excitement when the Nao Victoria sails to our region".
Cllr Crane highlighted the value of the tourism sector to the local economy, noting that
"high-profile arrivals such as this can only increase footfall further, which in turn can provide a welcome boost to local businesses, restaurants and accommodation providers".
The vessel’s visit has been funded by Visit North Yorkshire, the countywide organisation dedicated to promoting and driving tourism.
Lupo Bathke, Logistics manager of the Nao Victoria, shared his excitement, saying,
"We are so excited to sail into Scarborough which we know is one of the most popular seaside destinations in the region".
Seafront business operator, Rudi Barman, welcomed the imminent arrival, noting,
"The Nao Victoria is a truly striking vessel that will undoubtedly become a standout feature in the harbour, enhancing the town’s waterfront and complementing its existing tourism offering".
