The future management of crab and lobster fisheries off the Yorkshire Coast is being discussed at two open events this week.
The fishing community in Bridlington and Whitby are being invited to have their say on the new Fisheries Management Plans at the open events this week.
A public consultation on the new plans to determine how post-Brexit fisheries management should work ends next month.
Tonight an open event is being held at Bridlington Spa, with another in Whitby tomorrow.
Lewis Tattersall is from Seafish, a public body supporting the UK seafood sector, he says it's important local people have their say.
A government consultation on the new Fisheries Management Plans was launched in July and ends on October 1st..
The plans will set out how post-Brexit fisheries management should work.
Seafish says:
"From Bridlington to Brixham, brown crab, lobster and whelk are a cornerstone of England’s inshore fisheries, rural harbours and coastal communities.
In Bridlington alone, 1,956 tonnes of crab, 482 tonnes of lobster and 277 tonnes of whelk were landed into the hard-working port in 2022. However, these stocks are ever-changing and potentially vulnerable to pressures such as fishing, disease and marine pollution.
There is also a shortage of information about these shellfish. Since 2022, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) with support from Seafish and two fishing industry groups – the Crab and Lobster Management Group and Whelk Management Group – has been setting out ambitious plans to reform how these stocks are managed in English waters.
Fishermen and locals are now being invited to in-person events at port-side locations to gain a deeper understanding of the new measures and policies, and to have their say on the proposed reforms."
Fisheries Management Plans are said to be "a new and innovative way of managing fisheries" – they outline evidence-based actions and policies to keep fish stocks, including brown crab, lobster and whelk, at sustainable levels, or restoring them to a healthy status where needed.
Seafish says :
"FMPs will be one of the policy instruments with the most direct impact on the fishing industry’s day-to-day activities, shaping management fishery by fishery. It’s therefore important that the plans are informed by the real-world experiences of fishermen."
Lewis Tattersall says the idea of the meetings this week is to ensure the views of the local industry is reflected.
The meetings this week are free to attend places can be booked in advance but booking is not required and you can just turn up.
