Future of North Yorkshire Consultation Ends Today

Today is your final chance to have a say on the biggest changes to local Government in North Yorkshire since 1974.

A consultation on the future shape of North Yorkshire ends today

The Government has said North Yorkshire’s two-tier councils must end to make way for unitary local government.

Two plans ave been put forward with the county council backing a plan to create one large council for the whole of North Yorkshire and the District and Borough Councils backing a plan to split the county in two with The Scarborough Borough forming an eastern authority with Ryedale, Selby and York.

Richard Flinton is Chief Exec at North Yorkshire County Council he thinks change is needed.

Leader of North Yorkshire County council, Carl Les says change is needed

North Yorkshire County Council has put forward a case for it to become a unitary authority, absorbing it's seven district and borough councils.

This plan for the future of North Yorkshire has been put forward by the County Council and the City of York Council.

It would see the City of York left alone, remaining as a stand alone unitary authority and North Yorkshire County Council become a new unitary authority for the whole of the rest of North Yorkshire, effectively merging with the current district councils.

Six of North Yorkshire's local authorities want to see North Yorkshire County Council replaced with two separate unitary authorities which would also absorb the City of York.

Backers of the proposal to split England’s largest county into two and adsorb the existing unitary authority in York claim it would improve services and make local authorities more accountable to residents.

Under both plans Scarborough Borough Council would cease to exist, potentially it could be replaced with a town council to ensure Scarborough residents have a local voice, Whitby and Filey already have town Councils.

The public consultation on the proposals closes today/ Responses can be submitted using an online form at https://consult.communities.gov.uk/governance-reform-and-democracy/northyorkshire/consultation/
