Fresh proposals to redevelop the area around Scarborough train station and create a more welcoming public space for residents and visitors have been submitted.
A revised application outlining a series of suggested public realm improvements has been lodged with North Yorkshire Council’s planning department.
Known as the Station Gateway project, the first phase of the scheme aims to enhance the station’s surroundings by improving access to public transport and creating a more attractive environment for people arriving in the town.
New outdoor seating areas, resurfaced footpaths and tree planting have been proposed as part of the project along with enhanced accessible parking and improved pedestrian access to the station and nearby transport links.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for open to business, Cllr Mark Crane, whose responsibilities include regeneration, said:
“This has been a long-running project that started under the former borough council and has been progressed by this authority.
“The ambition is to use this funding to improve the area around the railway station, creating a more attractive and welcoming entry into Scarborough for residents and visitors.
“It is hoped that this regeneration can then inspire future investment in the town, ensuring that Scarborough remains a vibrant place to live, work and visit.
“The revised plans have been submitted and they will now be carefully considered and rigorously scrutinised as part of our usual planning process.”
The council website says the Station Gateway Phase 1A – Public Realm will deliver
"new and enhanced public realm and highway improvement outside Scarborough train station to create a welcoming arrival and civic space as well as supporting the town’s climate and environmental objectives. "
It says:
Phase 1A – Public Realm includes the following elements:
- new pedestrian crossings, new traffic signals, removal of traffic islands and hatchings, decluttering on Westborough / Valley Bridge Road junction
- tree planting and footpath resurfacing on Valley Bridge Road
- highway lane narrowing, traffic calming, wider footpath, table crossing, and seating on Westborough Road
Initial proposals for the first phase of the Station Gateway scheme were developed by Scarborough Borough Council and submitted for planning approval in 2022, prior to the launch of North Yorkshire Council in April 2023.
Following further work by North Yorkshire Council, the Scarborough Neighbourhood Board and other key stakeholders, the designs have since been refined with a greater focus on improving the immediate area around the front of the station.
Plans for the redevelopment, which would be funded within the £6.68 million allocated by the Government’s Local Regeneration Fund, have now been resubmitted to the council’s planning department for consideration.
It is hoped that redevelopment can act as a catalyst for further regeneration by attracting future investment in the area.
The new proposed designs have been developed by architects and engineers at Align Property Partners, the council's property consultancy.
