East Riding Council has received a planning application for the change of use of the former The Windsor pub in Bridlington.
The application, commissioned by Baycrest Care Ltd., seeks to turn the former pub on Windsor Crescent into a 23-bedroom care home.
The application claims there is “an acute shortage of high-quality residential care accommodation within Bridlington,” and cites the recent closure of Sandylane Residential Care Home to back this point up.
The building, believed to have been built around 1900, has been empty for a number of years following the closure of the pub. Documents submitted to the council state the building is “currently in a poor state of repair” and suffers from issues including:
- Severe damp
- Damaged windows and doors
- Serious mould
- Fallen ceilings
The “derelict” nature of the building has also meant the property “has become a target for vandalism, squatting and fly tipping” according to planning documents.
It is claimed that alterations to the exterior of the property would be minimal in order for the building to continue to share an aesthetic with the rest of its terrace row. To the rear would be a new lift shaft to provide access to the first and second floors of the building for those with restricted or no mobility.
The proposal also includes the construction of a conservatory and balcony at the second floor level. This, it is said, would provide residents additional outdoor space as well as views of the Bridlington coastline.
Beyond the conservatory and lift shaft, the vast majority of the alterations would be done on the interior of the building. The 23 proposed bedrooms would be provided across the ground, first, and second floors, with a further two suite rooms, with private living spaces, in the loft.
The existing site has a twelve space car park to the rear which would be retained in the proposals. These spaces would be shared between staff and visitors to the care home.
