Flood Warnings Issued for Yorkshire Coast

A number of flood warnings have been issued for the Yorkshire Coast as storm Arwen brings strong winds to the area.

Flood warnings have been issued due to strong northerly winds associated with Storm Arwen which are expected to cause large waves and spray overtopping along the North Yorkshire Coast from Saturday 27th November between 06:00 and 13:30 and the evening tide between 19:00 and 01:00 on Sunday 28th November 2021.

Experts say hazardous conditions might extend 2 hours either side of the high tide.

The areas most at risk are:

  • Sandsend, including the A174.
  • paths and promenades along Foreshore Road in Scarborough
  • properties at Sandside in Scarborough, where localised flooding may occur due to overtopping and spray.
  • paths and promenades along Spa complex in Scarborough
  • properties at Harbour Road and Floral Pavilion in Bridlington

The Government Floodline service are advising people to be be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous with debris.

There are also Flood Alerts in force for the entire North Sea Coast from Staithes to Whitby, Whitby to Filey and Bridlington.

Areas most at risk are :

  • exposed areas of the coast around the North Sea coast from Bridlington to Barmston
  • exposed areas of the coast around Staithes and Whitby, alongside low lying paths around Whitby Harbour
  • exposed areas of the coast around Scarborough, particularly low lying paths around Scarborough South Bay

The Scarborough and Buriston Coastguard Rescue Team are asking people to stary away from coastal paths and roads. They say:

"It's not going to be very pleasant along the Yorkshire coastline this weekend. The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning due to storm Arwen. These northerly winds will push up large waves that may become dangerous along coastal paths and roads this afternoon Friday and tomorrow Saturday.

Please avoid these areas, watch from a safe distance and if you see someone in danger dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Scarborough Tide times Friday 26th Nov High 20:36 4.8m Saturday 27th Nov 09:17 4.6m & 21:33 4.8m

The usual piers, roads & paths may be impacted by closures. Please observe the closures if put in place, they are for your and responding agencies/emergency services safety. "
