A flood alert is in force from Sandsend to Flamborough and a flood warning for parts of Sandsend.
The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts for stretches of the Yorkshire coast, warning residents and visitors of potential flooding due to high tides and prevailing weather conditions.
The alerts, issued on 26th September 2024, cover a significant portion of the coastline, from Staithes to Filey.
The areas most at risk include Whitby, Scarborough, and Sandsend.
The flood alert for the North Sea coast from Whitby to Filey, including Scarborough, warns of potential flooding between 9:00 PM on 26/09/2024 and 5:00 AM on 27/09/2024. The alert for the North Sea coast from Staithes to Whitby, including Sandsend and the tidal River Esk, is in effect between 12:30 AM and 4:00 AM on 27/09/2024.
A more severe flood warning has been issued specifically for Sandsend, where the sea front and properties adjacent to the A174 road are considered to be at high risk. The government is urging people to stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths, and roads in the affected areas, as large waves and sea spray could pose a danger.
The Environment Agency says it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary. Residents and visitors are advised to check the GOV.UK website or contact the Floodline helpline for the latest information and guidance.
