Fire Bike Takes to the Roads of North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire's Fire service has added a rather unusual vehicle to fleet this summer.

Alongside it's fire engines and command vehicles the service now has a Fire Bike.

Director of Capabilities - Tom Hirst - says it's being used to get safety messages out to the biker community.

The Fire Bike pilot scheme is currently being run by volunteers from within the fire service.

The Fire service say:

"FireBike sets out to Reduce Injuries by Direct Engagement (RIDE) with motorcyclists and other road users by being at the very heart of community events and connecting directly with bikers at specific motorcycle meeting points.

The FireBike team is made up of Fire Service personnel who each bring expert knowledge of the emergency services alongside a passion for motorcycles and rider safety with the sole objective of promoting road safety through education and training."

As well as aiming to reduce road traffic collisions and fatalities involving motorcycles by engaging with bikers in known risk areas, engaging with residents and listening to their concerns the Fire Bike is also being used to promote the Biker Down programme.

The Biker down programme provides training to the biker community covering how to prevent being involved in a motorcycle accident, scene safety and first aid. The course uses the expertise of the emergency services and Road Safety Officers to prepare motorcyclists should the worst happen on the roads.

Fifteen courses have run throughout 2022 with over 170 people receiving the training.

Director of Capabilities - Tom Hirst - says the number of people signing up for the biker safety course in North Yorkshire has doubled this summer.

The biker down courses have proved so popular that all the courses scheduled for this year are now full, but there is webform available where bikers can register their interest for future courses.
