Filey Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets are pursuing an exciting and ambitious fundraising challenge.
The cadets are taking on a 24-hour indoor Rowathon, aiming to row an incredible 500km — the distance from HM Naval Base Clyde (Faslane) to Filey — all to raise funds for a brand-new Trinity 500 rowing boat.
It started at 6pm on Friday and runs until 6pm Saturday.
Kirsty Hopkinson is a Filey Sea Cadets volunteer:
"Yeah, so the Sea Cadets volunteers, parents and supporters of the unit are trying to raise enough money for a new rowing boat called a Trinity 500. The distance of the 500 kilometres is aimed to be completed within 24 hours. The reason they're doing this is the Sea Cadets are after a new rowing book. It was all kick-started by our junior boys, last year, getting all the way up to nationals, which was sadly cancelled at the last minute due to weather. So they never actually got to go. But Filey Lions had donated £1,000 towards our trip to get them there to London. So rather than us sending them the money back, they said, Nope, keep it, put it towards something important like a new boat. And this is what the cadets wanted."
This challenge is more than just a test of endurance. The new Trinity 500 boat will provide cadets with greater opportunities to train, compete, develop teamwork skills and build confidence on the water.
Kirsty adds:
" We will row from Filey to HM Clyde in Faslane, Scotland. This is a Royal Navy submarine base where we actually have a serving member of staff. Our senior cadets are 12 to 18, we've got a fair few of them now staying overnight for the full 24 hours to cover the night stints as well as the staff.
"We've got cadets from the age of nine upwards that are going to fill out throughout the day. We've got food on for the cadets. We've got a pool table out, football out all ready for them to keep in their downtime. And we've actually got a just giving page so that people can donate virtually."
The cadets will row continuously for 24 hours using indoor rowing machines, working in shifts to reach their 500km goal. It’s a huge undertaking, and the determination and commitment they’ve shown has already been inspiring.
