North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is actively seeking dedicated individuals to join the ranks of on-call firefighters at Filey Fire Station, describing the initiative as a crucial step to "Be the Difference in Your Community!".
The Service is searching for enthusiastic residents eager to take on a flexible yet demanding role that will allow them to make a tangible impact on local safety.
The role of an on-call firefighter is vital to maintaining emergency response capabilities. It allows individuals to balance their existing work and personal lives while serving the community. Those accepted into the team must declare the specific times they are available to respond to emergencies. A key requirement is that during those available hours, the individual must be able to reach the fire station within approximately four minutes, guaranteeing a rapid response when duty calls. Beyond emergency call-outs, recruits are required to attend a weekly training evening focused on developing skills and fostering team camaraderie.
NYFRS stressed that while no formal qualifications are required, applicants must demonstrate robust personal qualities. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, physically fit, and prepared to pass a series of strength, fitness, and medical assessments, including a specific breathing apparatus test. Crucially, the Service requires that all applicants live or work within four minutes of the Filey fire station to ensure prompt action during an emergency.
A high level of commitment is deemed essential for the role, as on-call firefighters must be available for duty at agreed-upon times, ready to respond instantly when their pager alerts them. The Service noted that successful candidates must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, the ability to maintain composure under pressure, and teamwork. Training is provided to cover essential skills, including firefighting techniques, first aid, and equipment usage, with recruits expected to complete ongoing training to maintain their proficiency. Having strong community ties and a willingness to engage in fire prevention activities are also highlighted as important aspects of the role.
Speaking about the rewarding nature of the profession, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service asserted that working for the emergency services is both meaningful and impactful. The Service stated it is committed to helping colleagues reach their full potential within an environment that is "fair, inclusive, and supportive," emphasising that they value diverse perspectives and actively promote staff wellbeing.
For those considering applying, NYFRS mandates that applicants must possess the right to work in the UK without restriction and hold a full UK manual driving licence. As an equal opportunity employer, the Service is committed to creating an inclusive working environment.
NYFRS confirmed that safeguarding is a core element of the recruitment process, requiring all applicants to share this commitment. Successful candidates will undergo a thorough vetting process, which includes satisfactory Vetting or DBS checks, references, and a medical assessment.
Potential recruits are encouraged by the Service to carefully tailor their applications to ensure their responses align with the advertised requirements, ahead of the closing date of 31 December 2026.
