East Riding of Yorkshire Council is marking Earth Day by highlighting local renewable energy and environmental projects, including solar carports at leisure centres in Bridlington, Hornsea, and Driffield.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council is marking Earth Day 2026 by showcasing a wide range of renewable energy and environmental projects. The local authority says these initiatives are actively benefiting local communities and playing a vital role in helping to reduce carbon emissions across the region.
Among the key initiatives being highlighted to mark the occasion are new solar carports that have been installed at council-owned leisure centres. These green energy upgrades have been rolled out at facilities in the coastal towns of Bridlington and Hornsea, as well as in Driffield, Beverley, and Pocklington.
The local authority states that the installation of these solar carports is projected to make a significant financial impact, saving the council £100,000 a year on its electricity bills.
The solar scheme was supported by a substantial £350,000 investment from the government-owned energy company, Great British Energy. According to the council, this specific project is expected to successfully cut carbon dioxide emissions by 426 tonnes over the course of the next twenty-five years.
In addition to the leisure centres, a solar farm extension at the council-owned South Cliff Holiday Park has also been highlighted as a major success. The council notes that this solar extension will save approximately £45,000 a year in energy bills, which will amount to almost £1.3 million in savings over the project's entire lifetime.
The local authority is also heavily supporting the natural environment through its involvement with the Humber Forest initiative. Since its inception, the ambitious planting project has seen one million trees planted across the area. The council says these newly planted trees play a key role in natural flood prevention, increasing local biodiversity, and actively reducing carbon emissions.
Residents across the East Riding are also directly benefiting from renewable energy infrastructure via local community funds, which are funded by nearby wind farms.
These community funds are provided by energy developers as part of their corporate responsibility commitments. They are specifically designed to give back to the local communities that host the renewable energy projects. The financial support has already been distributed to a wide range of local causes, helping to sustain community buildings, local sports clubs, and youth groups.
Furthermore, the council has taken the opportunity on Earth Day to praise local residents for playing their part in supporting the environment. The East Riding is currently ranked among the best recycling areas in the whole country, having previously won national awards for its high recycling rates and innovative schemes.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for environment and transport, Councillor Paul West, said:
"We’re dedicated to supporting the environment and we’re proud to highlight these fantastic projects across the East Riding. From planting trees to installing solar panels at our leisure centres, we are playing our part to support nature, reduce carbon emissions and help local communities."
The local authority adds that more information regarding the local community funds, along with guidance on how local groups can apply for funding, is available to the public on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council website.
