The Leader of East Riding Council is set to run to become Hull & East Yorkshire’s first directly elected mayor.
Councillor Anne Handley has been the leader of the Conservative led East Riding of Yorkshire Council since May 2023, but she now has her eyes on a new position.
With the announcement of a devolution deal for Hull & East Yorkshire being signed off by the Government in September, it became apparent that in addition to having a new political body, a Combined Authority, the region would soon have its first directly elected mayor.
An election for the inaugural mayor will take place in May 2025. It's now know that the Conservative Party’s candidate for the election will be the leader of East Riding Council, Cllr Anne Handley who was the only candidate on the Conservative Party’s shortlist for the election.
This news has been met with criticism from other political parties including from Hull City Council’s Cllr Jack Haines. The Liberal Democrat has said that Anne Handley will “fly the flag for that Conservative failure in May’s Mayoral election.”
Both the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats are yet to announce their candidates for next May’s election.
