New legislation banning dogs from Scarborough's South Bay has come into force following intense local discussions, though visiting tourists have expressed support for the restrictions.
New regulations restricting canine access to Scarborough's South Bay are now active.
The legislation officially commenced yesterday, marking a significant change for dog walkers and beachgoers alike. The implementation of these new rules has generated intense discussion among residents, leading to a fierce debate within the local community regarding the restriction of pets on the popular stretch of North Yorkshire coastline.
Despite the local controversy, tourists travelling to the coastal town from places such as Sheffield and Rochdale have shared positive views on limiting dog access to certain sandy areas. Out-of-town guests largely believe it is a necessary step to ensure the environment remains clean and family-friendly during the peak holiday season.
One holidaymaker explained their reasoning for supporting the ban, highlighting concerns over hygiene and overcrowding during the busy summer months. They said:
"Yeah, because it'll get too many people in the summer and not everybody cleans up after their dogs and you don't want your children playing where the dogs have been."

Another visitor agreed with the sentiment, pointing out that the safety and cleanliness of the area for younger guests is a priority. They said:
"I'm okay with that, because of children playing on the on the sands."
A further tourist expressed their fondness for the seaside resort, noting that they appreciate the balance of having designated areas where pets are still permitted while keeping other zones pet-free. They said:
"We love Scarborough. I'm glad they've got somewhere for the dogs to play on the beach."
