Residents of a nearby Hotel have been evacuated.
The former Marine Residence Hotel was gutted by Fire in July which followed an earlier blaze in December 2022. Since the July blaze the road outside the hotel has remained closed due to concerns of the structural integrity of the remains,
Today as high winds from storm Babet hit Scarborough, local councillor Rich Maw reports that one of the gable ends of the building has collapsed.
In a social media post Councillor Maw said:
"Storm Babet has today brought one of the gable ends of the burnt out shell of the Marine Residence down.
The structure has potentially been compromised and as a result the residents of the Cumberland Hotel have been evacuated.
This afternoon I've spent liaising with emergency response, the police and the management of both the Cumberland and the Esplanade Hotel who have kindly hosted the displaced holidaymakers.
The Marine Residence is under the jurisdiction of the fire and rescue service who's priority is the safety of the public.
Whilst onsite I could actually see the front gable end swaying in the wind!
This situation must now quickly be resolved and I will be applying whatever pressure I can to have the building demolished imminently."
Earlier on Friday North Yorkshire Council's Assistant director for environmental services, Michael Leah, said:
“We are closely monitoring the situation regarding the former Marine Residence Hotel that was destroyed by fire on Belmont Road in Scarborough earlier this year. A number of people are being moved to safety due to concerns regarding the continuing risks relating to high winds and potential debris.
“We are also appealing to people to stop moving the barriers on Belmont and Ramshill roads. Anyone doing so is putting themselves at risk.”
Earlier this week North Yorkshire Council revealed plans to demolish the former Marine Residence Hotel’s ‘dangerous’ building following the two fires saying that the building was “past the point of rescue”.
The hotel, which shut down in 2020, was called the Granville Lodge Hotel before being branded as the Marine Residence Hotel.
An expert report commissioned by the authority has concluded that the severity of the fire and the intense heat generated during the blaze mean that the building is not capable of being renovated or saved for the future.
The council has concluded that “full demolition is the only viable and safe option” for the Victorian property which was originally constructed as three large town houses in around 1875.
The unsafe nature of the building has also led to disruption owing to the closure of Lower Ramshill Road and Belmont Road.
